We were asked to do a promotion for Bankhead Farmhouse - a lovely new self catering holiday rental house near Alyth in Perthshire.

It's important to note that with our system the client can update each page of the web site themselves. This is something that very few web designers give you. It saves you a heck of a lot of time and it is very easy to use. Even if you already have a web site it's ideal for a second site or for a full site makeover.

The reason we started off with a professional web site was that just about everyone has some form of access to the web these days and they certainly will in the future. By designing a nice web site and then pointing all "offline" promotions to it then we can get the maximum impact. In reality because of the lack of space in the offline materials we are using the web site to do all the selling.

If we are careful to write the offline material so that it is fairly "generic" then we can use the web site to update prices etc. We don't have to worry about changing a whole lot of brochures.

Because the client had the content already written and he added it himself the cost for doing the web site was £699.00.

Search Engine Optimisation...

We then decided with the client that it would be an idea to get some good terms on top of the search engines.

We researched the terms that were best suited for a web site like this.

We chose terms like "golf holidays in scotland", "activity holiday in scotland", "hillwalking in scotland", "perthshire vacation rentals" etc. He will get a combination of 50 top 20 positions over the major search engines.

Search engines can bring you a heck of a lot of traffic - after all almost everyone is using the internet for information these days. If your site does not rank highly then it will never be seen. So it is wise to get professionals to optimise your web site so the search engines pick it up and rank you well on your chosen keywords.

The client then decided that it was an idea to be able to give out a high impact business card to clients who come to the house and also to pass them out to various organisations. The idea being that we wanted something that we could easily use "offline" to bring people to the web site where all the information is. People can take the card from the house and show other people where they were for their vacation thus spreading the word even further.

We decided to go for a double sided full colour card with a great picture of the house to try and get maximum impact.

To add to the promotion and to enable the client to send out some material to attract prospective organisations like tourist boards, golf clubs, hillwalking clubs etc to his web site we designed a full colour A4 3 fold brochure.

We deliberately designed the brochure with the idea that we should use it to bring people to the web site. We did not want to put things like prices on it. The reason being was that we can change the prices on the web site in 5 minutes.

So by keeping the brochure fairly "generic" then all the client has to do in the future is change the details on his web site and does not have to think about a redesign of a brochure if his conditions change.

Postcards are a great way of getting the word out about a business like this. After all everyone sends postcards when they are on holiday. They are ideal for small businesses like hotels and guesthouses. We designed a postcard very similar to the business card here and made sure the web site address was on it.

We feel that when people receive the postcard then they are likely to go and look at the web site just to see where their friends or relations are staying. Thus spreading the word about the farmhouse even further.

We could have designed keyrings, coasters, clocks etc with details of the farmhouse on them to help in the promotion. These products however are probably more suitable for small hotels where they could be sold as gifts. So as well as help in the exposure they could generate a little income to offset the costs of the promotion.
